Prime Minister of Finland recalled the war in Ukraine in his New Year's address
In his New Year's address, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo mentioned that the war in Ukraine started by Russia has been going on for almost two years. He noted that the Russian invasion has finally changed the security situation in Europe.
Helsinki will continue to firmly support Kyiv, Orpo assured. His speech was published on the government's website, Ukrinform reports.
He emphasized that the Ukrainian people are courageously fighting not only for the freedom and independence of their country, but also for Europe as a whole and for Western values.
"Our decisions at the national level, such as increasing the production capacity of heavy ammunition, allow us to support Ukraine in the long term. At the same time, we are also strengthening our own defense capabilities," Orpo said.
The Finnish Prime Minister emphasized that Finland, as a member of the European Union, is actively working to ensure that Europe is united with Ukraine.
"The start of accession negotiations with Ukraine sends a message of hope to the Ukrainian people: Ukraine's place is in the EU. By welcoming Ukraine to the bloc, European countries also commit to supporting Ukraine in the long term," the Finnish Prime Minister added.
Earlier, Finnish Defense Minister Antti Hakkanen announced the start of production of artillery ammunition for Ukraine. According to him, negotiations on this issue have been completed.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, Russia has threatened that if tensions between Moscow and NATO increase, Finland will be the first country to suffer. Since the country joined the bloc this year after decades of neutrality, it has become a hostile player for Russia.
