Poland has begun construction of a system of fortifications, fortifications, forward bases, and logistics hubs on the border with Russia and Belarus. The implementation of the East Shield project was scheduled for 2025-2028, but the start took place earlier.

The corresponding announcement was made by the head of the Polish government Donald Tusk on October 14, 2024, Ukrinform reports."The East Shield project is starting," the prime minister said during a visit to the Ożysz military training ground in the Warmia and Mazury Voivodeship, near the border with Russia.

"East Shield is a joint initiative of Poland and the Baltic states. The United States, the United Kingdom, and Finland will also help.

Tusk noted that much of the infrastructure will be civilian in nature, although the project is aimed at "deterring the enemy."

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense of Poland Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said that at least 10 billion zlotys (more than $2.5 billion) would be allocated to build defense infrastructure along the border with Russia and Belarus in 2024-2028. "This is much more than the Baltic States or any other country in our region is investing," he emphasized.

Kosiniak-Kamysz said that first, fortifications and military warehouses will appear on Poland's eastern border.

Further, according to publicly available information, it is planned to expand the fortifications, improve the warning system, create advanced bases, logistics hubs, a drone countermeasure system, etc.
