Poland creates a special unit near the borders with Russia and Belarus: Defence Minister Błaszczak gives details

Polish Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak said that a new special demining unit in his country's armed forces would strengthen the security of NATO's eastern flank. By this, he hinted that the new military unit, stationed in Augustów, will counter threats from Russia and Belarus, where mercenaries of the private military company Wagner are stationed.
The Polish defence minister shared the details on his Twitter page. He noted that the military unit in Augustów will be built from scratch and "will not be the last".
"I will soon inform you about new investments," Minister Błaszczak announced.
He assured that the current government cares about the security of Poland and therefore creates new and modernises existing military units.
"We are well aware that Polish soldiers are the best guarantee of the security of our homeland," the Polish defence minister concluded.
To recap: On 23 July, Błaszczak announced that a new sapper battalion would be created by the end of 2023. It will be part of the 15th Giżycko Mechanised Brigade of the 16th Pomeranian Mechanised Division. It will be deployed in the town of Augustov near the border with Belarus and the Kaliningrad region of Russia.
Its main task will be to strengthen the so-called Suwałki corridor.
As Polskie Radio 24 reported, the creation of the new military unit was planned back in 2022 as part of the package of strengthening the country's Armed Forces for 2023-2025 approved by the Council of Ministers.
