Another eruption of Mount Etna took place in Sicily, causing disruption to transportation. However, this did not affect the operation of the airport in the Sicilian city of Catania.

The eruption occurred in the southeastern crater of the volcano. Scientists recorded the maximum level of lava emission at 4.5 km. This was reported by La Sicilia (scroll to the bottom of the page to see photos and videos).

Experts from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology of Italy noted that after the aftershocks intensify, a lava eruption phase begins. On Etna, paroxysmal activity was recorded from the southeastern crater with ash falling on nearby villages.

A lava fountain gushes from the southeastern crater of Etna. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology of the Etna Observatory in Catania estimates the height of the eruptive column at about 4.5 km above sea level. The model predicts the spread of volcanic ash to the east and southeast.

It is worth noting that the current phase of Etna's eruption, which is currently limited to the summit of the volcano, does not affect the operation of the Vincenzo Bellini International Airport in Catania.

Volcanologist Boris Benke said that the first two episodes of activity at the southeastern crater of Etna were recorded on the evening of November 10. He took a photo of the first seconds of the lava ejection from the crater.

Etna is the highest active volcano in Europe. Its maximum height changes due to eruptions and collapses in between. The volcano is located on the east coast of Sicily, not far from the cities of Messina and Catania, so during eruptions these cities are often covered by a thick layer of ash. Etna covers an area of 1,190 square kilometers, making it the largest active volcano in Italy, more than 2.5 times larger than its closest rival, Vesuvius.

On the night of August 13, the most active volcano in Europe, Mount Etna, erupted on the east coast of Sicily. As a result, the streets of the city of Catania were covered with ash, and transportation was paralyzed.

The previous powerful eruption of Mount Etna took place in May 2023. As a result of the natural phenomenon, cities in Sicily were covered with ash.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, in early March 2023, a strong eruption of the Merapi volcano began on the island of Java in Indonesia. A cloud of smoke up to 7 km high soared into the sky, and lava flows spread over 1.5 km.
