Media found out who "encouraged" Orban to leave the hall during the vote on negotiations with Ukraine
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban walked out of the room during a meeting of the European Council, which decided to start membership talks with Ukraine. Orban was advised to take this step by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
This was reported by Politico, citing sources informed of the negotiations. During several hours of difficult discussions, the Hungarian Prime Minister held back the decision with his veto, even though other leaders were united in opposing his position.
During the talks, Scholz told Orban that if he really did not want to agree, he could leave the room so that EU leaders could make a unanimous decision to start negotiations with Ukraine in his absence.
One of the journalists' interlocutors noted that this proposal did not appear spontaneously, but was agreed upon during previous discussions.
Another source said that Orban "left the room for a moment in a pre-agreed and constructive manner."
It is worth noting that Viktor Orban, who is called a friend of Russian dictator Putin, said at the beginning of the meeting that Budapest would block both the allocation of financial aid to Ukraine from the EU budget and the start of negotiations on the country's accession to the union. He said that Ukraine allegedly "does not deserve" this.
The leaders of the countries participating in the summit spoke out against the Hungarian prime minister's position unitedly. This pressure led to Orban being forced to leave the session hall when the vote on Ukraine was taking place.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, on December 14, the leaders of the European Union decided to start negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova on joining the EU. Georgia was also granted the status of a candidate for membership in the organization.
