"He does not want a truce, but a sustainable peace." Portnikov explains what Ukraine should expect from Rubio's appointment as US Secretary of State. Video

The new US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that the administration of President Donald Trump is interested in a long-term peace in Ukraine, in which a new war would not start again in a few years. However, how the Americans will achieve this remains a question, as the views of Russia and the United States on peace are very different.

This opinion was expressed by Ukrainian journalist Vitaliy Portnikov. He noted that Rubio's view of the end of the war as a long process, not an episode, coincides with the theses expressed by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin at a meeting with the permanent members of the Russian Security Council.

"Putin also said at the time that he was not interested in a ceasefire, during which Ukraine could allegedly rearm and prepare for a new war, but rather in a long-term peace," Portnikov said.

However, Putin's and the Trump administration's views on this long-term peace differ dramatically.

For Trump, it is important that the war is not just over, but that Ukraine remains on the political map of the world, at least within the borders that it can defend against Russia. For Putin, it is important that Ukraine disappears, and Russia becomes the "political hegemon of Europe" and controls not only the countries that were part of the USSR, but also those that were in the Soviet occupation zone.

According to Portnikov, Trump does not have any new tools to put pressure on the dictator to force him to accept the US terms, at least regarding the ceasefire.

"He has the tools that his predecessor Joe Biden had and used. But if we follow the path of strengthening sanctions, supporting Ukraine and reconsidering its Euro-Atlantic integration, we can say that during his term Trump can create conditions for success," he said.

To recap: Rubio said that the conflict initiated by Russia has caused significant damage to Ukraine, Russia itself, and the stability of Europe. The only way to solve this problem is through pragmatism and serious diplomacy.

According to Rubio, ending the Russian-Ukrainian war is one of the priorities of the administration of the new US President Donald Trump. The key task facing the White House is to find a solution that would ensure that the war does not flare up again in a few years.
