Israeli government approves deal with Hamas on prisoners and pause in fighting
The Israeli Cabinet of Ministers on Tuesday, after more than five hours of discussion, approved a deal with Hamas mediated by Qatar to release at least 50 hostages held by terrorists in the Gaza Strip. In exchange, Israel agreed to a four-day pause in operations in the enclave.
In addition, Jerusalem gave permission to deliver more fuel and humanitarian aid to Gaza. Israel will allow about 300 trucks with humanitarian supplies from Egypt every day. This was reported by The Times of Israel and Axios.
In exchange for the return of hostages, Israel will release about 150 Palestinian prisoners, mostly women and minors.
It is now known that the names of the Palestinian prisoners to be released will be made public within the next 24 hours so that Israeli citizens can challenge their release in court. Israel will not release Palestinian prisoners convicted of killing Israelis.
"In the second phase, Hamas may release dozens more women, children and the elderly in exchange for Israel extending the truce for a few more days," the report said.
The office of the Israeli Prime Minister noted that the release of each of the next ten hostages by Hamas would lead to an additional day of pause in the fighting.
"The government of Israel, the Israel Defense Forces and the security forces will continue the war to return all the abductees, complete the elimination of Hamas and ensure that Gaza no longer poses any threat to the state of Israel," they added.
It should be noted that this official statement does not include any concessions such as the release of Palestinian prisoners or the delivery of additional fuel and humanitarian aid to Gaza.
