Robert Fico once again opposed Ukraine's membership in NATO

Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico has once again spoken out against Ukraine's membership in the North Atlantic Alliance, saying that it could provoke a global world conflict. According to him, Kyiv's accession to the bloc is a "guarantee of World War III."

He said this on Thursday, July 12, in a video message posted on Facebook. "I understand Ukraine's desire, it is a sovereign country, but Ukraine's membership in NATO is only a guarantee of World War III," Fico said.

The prime minister added that he had instructed Slovak representatives at the NATO summit in Washington to reiterate that Ukraine could join the bloc only if it met all the criteria for membership and after all member states signed the agreement.

The pro-Russian Slovak prime minister's comments came just hours after the country's delegation at the NATO summit supported the common position that Ukraine is on an "irreversible path" to joining the alliance.

As a reminder, NATO countries agreed on the final declaration of the Washington summit. It states that NATO allies will commit to supporting Ukraine "on its irreversible path to full Euro-Atlantic integration, including NATO membership." The document emphasizes that Ukraine's future lies in NATO.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, on July 5, Fico made his first public appearance after an assassination attempt in May. He made a speech against progressive ideologies and also praised Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for his visit to Russian announcer Putin.
