On Wednesday, July 10, NATO issued some of its harshest comments yet on China's involvement in the war in Ukraine, accusing Beijing of being a "driving factor" for Russia. This provoked an angry response from the Chinese mission to the EU.

This was reported by the BBC. Beijing, in particular, called on NATO to"stop hyping the so-called Chinese threat and provoking confrontation and rivalry."

In addition, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said today that the Alliance is defaming his country with "fabricated disinformation."

China also urged NATO to stay out of the Asia-Pacific region, saying that the Alliance's efforts to strengthen military and security ties with China's neighbors undermine the country's interests and peace and stability in the region.

"NATO continues to play on the interconnectedness between Europe's security and security in the Asia-Pacific region...We urge it to stay within its role as a regional defense organization in the North Atlantic. The Alliance should not become a disturber of peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region or a tool used by some great powers to maintain hegemony," the Chinese statement said.

China's mission to the EU said that Beijing seeks a political solution to the war in Ukraine and has never provided lethal weapons to any party in the conflict, adding that "normal trade flows" with Russia should not be disrupted or coerced.

It is worth noting that these comments come as Beijing is conducting military exercises with Belarus, which Russian President Vladimir Putin has used as a springboard for his invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

As a reminder, on Wednesday, July 10, in the final communiqué, NATO countries demanded that China "cease all material and political support for Russia's military actions," issuing the strongest condemnation of Beijing in the history of the alliance.

In a joint statement at the annual summit in Washington, NATO said that "Beijing's large-scale support for Russia's defense industrial base reinforces the threat that Russia poses to its neighbors and Euro-Atlantic security."
