Firefighters' work is complicated by copper roofing

In Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, a large fire broke out in the building of the Copenhagen Bersen Stock Exchange in the morning on April 16. It houses valuable works of art. The spire on the roof has already collapsed.

Bersen is one of the oldest buildings in the city and was built in 1625. This was reported by TV 2 Nyheder and the BBC.

Everyone who was in the building managed to leave it, and officials tried to save some historical paintings. Police blocked the surrounding streets and organized detour routes.

The spire, which is the main decoration of the building, was at the center of the fire and soon collapsed. Firefighters' work is complicated by the copper roof, which keeps the heat inside.

Minister of Culture Jakob Engel-Schmidt said that "400 years of Danish cultural heritage has been burned."

The building, constructed in 1625, is a stone's throw from the Danish Parliament, Folketing, and the Royal Palace, Christiansborg. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.

The Dutch Renaissance building on the city's Slotsholmen was commissioned by King Christian IV of Denmark to transform Copenhagen into a major trading center.

Its spire depicted four dragons with their tails twisted into a spear and three crowns symbolizing close ties with neighbors Norway and Sweden.
