In the Serbian capital Belgrade, hundreds of opposition activists protested after a deadly accident at the Novi Sad railway station. On November 1, the roof of a concrete shed collapsed, killing 14 people (including a six-year-old girl) and injuring three others.
On Sunday, November 3, protesters rallied near government buildings in the center of the capital, accusing the authorities of negligence and corruption. Reuters noted that President Aleksandar Vucic and his allies deny the allegations.
People took to the streets with signs reading "Blood on your hands" and "Corruption kills." They chanted, "Arrest Vucic!" and "We are all under a canopy." They also demanded that high-ranking officials resign immediately.
Police formed a cordon outside the building of the Ministry of Construction and Infrastructure.
"We are all shocked and angry... the state is directly responsible for this," said one of the protesters, Djordje Dimitrijevic.
On November 3, Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic said that law enforcement officials are investigating who is responsible for the incident.
"The prosecutor's office and police are working to establish criminal liability... (and) there is no way to avoid political responsibility," the prime minister said.
The station in Novi Sad was renovated in 2021 and 2022. Minor repairs also continued until July of this year.
The city's prosecutor's office reported on Sunday that its investigators had questioned 26 people in connection with the accident, including Transport Minister Goran Vesic, and examined important documents. Another 14 people were summoned for questioning.
