Agent Krasnov: photo of JD Vance wearing a T-shirt in support of USSR resurfaces after Zelenskyy talks
Against the backdrop of harsh statements by US Vice President JD Vance in the White House, an old photo of him wearing a red T-shirt with a Soviet symbol - a hammer and sickle - has gone viral on social media again. It also features the abbreviation USSR, which means "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics."
The photo first gained momentum online in July 2024, when the US election campaign was underway. Social media users were actively discussing whether the photo really depicted Vance and what could have influenced this choice of clothing.
As Snopes journalists found out, the photo is genuine, although its exact origin is unknown. However, it does show Vance wearing a T-shirt with Soviet symbols. The photo has caused active debate online, and some users see political overtones in it.
"Meanwhile two wrestlers and an Irish man with suspenders stand next to him. Maybe it's Halloween?" one of X users commented on the photo.
Representatives of Vance's team confirmed that it was a Halloween costume in which he was transformed into WWE wrestler Nikolai Volkoff. However, they could not say when the photo was taken.
Volkoff, whose real name was Josip Hrvoje Peruzović, was a Croatian-American athlete who competed in the professional ring from the 1970s to 1995. In his shows, he often entered the arena as a Soviet wrestler, using Soviet symbols.
Along with Vance, there were other people in the photo wearing T-shirts with the inscription "New World Order" like the American professional wrestling team of the same name.
As reported, on February 28, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy paid an official visit to the United States. At the White House, he met with President Donald Trump, and earlier he spoke with U.S. senators.
While talking to journalists in the Oval Office, Zelenskyy got into a public spat with US Vice President J.D. Vance, in which Trump intervened. They argued at high pitch about Ukraine war, and it happened in front of TV cameras. Trump accused his Ukrainian counterpart of disrespect, ingratitude, and urged him not to tell America what to do, as Ukraine has been in a no-win situation since the beginning of the war.
The Ukrainian president left the White House early, and the planned press conference was canceled. The Financial Times wrote that Vance and Trump were preparing for a quarrel with Zelenskyy to put him in a weaker position in the negotiations.
After meeting with Zelenskyy and arguing with him, Trump said that the Ukrainian president had "disrespected" the United States and was "not ready for peace" if America was involved.
World leaders supported Zelenskyy and Ukraine amid a tense visit to the White House, and the president himself expressed gratitude to America, including Trump, for the visit.
