"A continuation of irresponsible behavior": EU reacts to another round of Putin's nuclear threats
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin's new threats to use nuclear weapons against non-nuclear countries will not change the European Union's support of Ukraine. The nuclear rhetoric of the president of the aggressor country once again demonstrates his irresponsible behavior.
This was stated by the EU External Action Service Spokesperson Peter Stano during a briefing in Brussels on Thursday, September 26. This is how he answered the question of how the EU will respond to the Kremlin's expansion of the list of "threats" that could result in the use of nuclear weapons.
The European diplomat reminded that this is not the first time Putin has relied on his nuclear "gamble."
"This is just a continuation of a very irresponsible and unacceptable behaviour on the side of Putin, showing basically to the whole world – especially during the United Nations General Assembly. He does not doesn’t shy away from playing nuclear gamble over and over again. We, of course, strongly reject these threats and the position of the European Union remains unchanged," Stano said.
The diplomat reminded that Russia is a permanent member of the UN Security Council, an organization whose duty is to maintain peace in the world, but which Putin openly undermines.
The day before, the Kremlin admitted that it had decided to change its nuclear doctrine in order to threaten Western countries. According to Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Russia is "warning" the West of the consequences in the event of an attack. At the same time, he made it clear that it does not necessarily mean nuclear weapons.
On September 25, at a meeting of the Russian Security Council on nuclear deterrence, Putin said that Russia was adjusting its nuclear doctrine to make "clarifications" regarding the necessary preconditions for the use of such weapons.
As reported, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken once again criticized Russian dictator Putin's threats to use nuclear weapons. Washington considers the Kremlin leader's rhetoric irresponsible.
