A 19-year-old tourist from Ukraine who scratched his name on the ancient Roman architectural monument, the Colosseum, was detained in Rome. According to Italian law, the young man will have to pay a fine of about €15,000 for his actions.

This was reported by Agenzia ANSA. Journalists, citing the police, say that one of the most grandiose and famous structures of the ancient world was defaced by Ukrainian Dima.

The date of the incident is unknown, and the first articles about it appeared in the Italian media on August 16. The publications say that a "young man of Ukrainian origin" was visiting the monument in the Italian capital with his friends.

In the afternoon, he allegedly made an inscription "Dima" on the wall of the Colosseum "between the first ring and the atrium". His gesture attracted the attention of a woman who immediately complained to the police.

Apparently, the young man was stopped by eyewitnesses, and then the police took him to the police station, where they drew up a report and fined him.

"The intervention of the police, who stopped and punished the author of the new act of vandalism against the Colosseum, was good. There can be no place for hooligans and idiots in a city rich in treasures that are the property of humanity," Rome's Mayor Roberto Gualtieri said in his reaction to the incident.

Italian media emphasize that this is not the first such incident with tourists visiting the Colosseum. Law enforcement officers have not always been able to catch the offenders, and those who have been detained have usually been accused of damaging cultural property. In Italy, such a crime (Article 518 of the Criminal Code) is punishable by imprisonment for two to five years or a fine of up to €15,000.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, the network told about seven "unforgivable" mistakes made by tourists in Rome. It is emphasized that only advance planning and a clear route based on feedback from other tourists and locals can make a trip really successful.
