Weapon of revenge that terrifies Russia: what is known about the "Liutyi" drones that attacked the military airfield in Adygea. Photo

Russian military airfield "Khanskaya" was struck by long-range strike drones "Liutyi"

On the night of October 10, drones attacked the Russian military airfield Khanskaya in Maikop, located in the Republic of Adygea. According to preliminary information, it was attacked with the help of Ukrainian long-range strike drones "Liutyi".

According to the advisor to the mayor of Mariupol, Petro Andriushchenko, after the attack, enemy aircraft began to take off from the airfield. In particular, it was Su-34 and Su-27 fighters.

"During the attack, our Liutyi UAVs tried to leave the runway with various modifications. We will see how successful they were soon," he writes.

Later, Andriushchenko added that "apparently, the Khanskaya military airfield in Maikop shot down everything. With itself".

A fire broke out near the airfield, prompting the head of the republic, Murat Kumpilov, to evacuate the village of Rodnikovo, home to more than a thousand people. According to him, there were no casualties among the locals. The fire is still being extinguished.

It should be noted that the Khanska airfield, located 6 kilometers from Perekop, borders Rodnykove, from where residents were evacuated. The 272nd training aviation base of the Krasnodar Military Aviation School is based there.

What is known about the "Liutyi" drones

Since the beginning of 2024, Ukraine has begun using new Lyutyi attack drones, which have already hit dozens of strategic Russian targets. These drones were first announced by Ukroboronprom in October 2022, when it announced its intention to create a drone weighing more than 200 kg and capable of carrying a 75 kg warhead over a distance of more than 1000 km.

The model of the drone shown in November 2022 already had the inscription "February" on it, although it was not clear at the time that this was its name. The drone also bore the inscription "Az vozdam", which, according to Ukroboronprom representatives, is not a name but a "mission". This passage from the Gospel in Church Slavonic refers to God's vengeance: "Vengeance is mine, I will take vengeance, says the Lord."

In November 2022, the first tests were successfully carried out, and in November 2023, the Minister of Strategic Industries Oleksandr Kamyshin announced the mass production of drones similar to Iran's Shahed-136. He was probably referring to the Liutiy drone, which became the first analog of Iranian drones in terms of power and range.

The Liutyi UAV currently costs about $200, 000.

Ukraine does not disclose many details about the Liutiy drone. It is only known that its payload is 75 kg and its range is up to 1000 km. After the operations in Russia, more became known, including the structure of the drone, which the Russians were able to photograph.

The drone has a two-beam fuselage and is powered by a three-propeller engine. It is equipped with a fixed-wheeled landing gear and can take off directly from roads with good surfaces. Its length is 4.4 m, wingspan is 6.7 m, and takeoff weight is 250-300 kg. The fuselage is made of fiberglass with epoxy resin and reinforced with metal mesh and plywood.

Experts note the significant progress of the "Liutyi" compared to previous Ukrainian drones. They especially emphasize the new guidance system, which allows the drone to successfully cover long distances and accurately hit targets deep in the Russian Federation. The strikes on Russian factories indicate the improvement of drone electronics.

Since the beginning of 2024, drones have successfully attacked about ten oil refineries in Russia within an 800-kilometer radius. Thanks to a new warhead, they have been used to attack more secure facilities, such as the Novolipetsk Metallurgical Plant and the Sverdlov Explosives Plant in Nizhny Novgorod. All attacks on these facilities were carried out by groups of two to six drones.

Earlier it was reported that on the night of Thursday, October 10, drones visited the military airfield of the Russian Aerospace Forces in the Republic of Adygea, which is located near the village of Khanskaya. Local residents heard loud explosions, after which, they say, a fire broke out near the airfield.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, on the night of October 9, the 67th BC warehouse of the Main Missile and Artillery Directorate of the Russian Defense Ministry was attacked in Karachev, Bryansk region. Among other things, the warehouse was used to store ammunition from the DPRK and guided bombs.
