"We cooperate closely with the IAEA": the Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to the information that Ukraine can make its own nuclear bomb

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has responded to an article by The Times that states that Ukraine could make its own simple nuclear weapon within a few months if the United States stops providing assistance. The Ministry emphasized that Ukraine has no such plans.

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhiy Tykhyi commented on the media reports on social network X on Wednesday, October 13. He noted that our country adheres to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

In addition, the Foreign Ministry spokesperson added, Kyiv cooperates with the International Atomic Energy Agency, which makes it impossible to use nuclear weapons.

"We do not possess, develop or intend to develop nuclear weapons. Ukraine closely cooperates with the IAEA and is fully transparent for its monitoring, which makes it impossible to use nuclear materials for military purposes," Tykhyi wrote.

It should be noted that the Times article refers to an analytical note prepared for the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. It states that Kyiv does not have the capacity to build and operate the facilities necessary for uranium enrichment. However, the country could use plutonium from spent fuel rods from 9 Ukrainian nuclear reactors. Its total volume could reach half a ton, enough to produce hundreds of tactical warheads.

As reported by OBOZ.UA:

- German publication Bild previously noted that due to Russia's full-scale invasion, Ukraine is considering the possibility of restoring its nuclear weapons stockpile. The country may need only a few weeks to create its first nuclear bomb.

- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine called this information "insinuations of unnamed sources of the Bild publication."

- At the same time, President Volodymyr Zelensky also stated that Ukraine is not building nuclear weapons. He emphasized that our priority is to join NATO.
