"Visually - World War II": Ukrainian defender told how the Kherson operation took place and pointed out the main difficulties

A Ukrainian military officer on the anniversary of the Kherson counteroffensive spoke about the operation

Wednesday, August 30, was the anniversary of the beginning of the Kherson counteroffensive by the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Ukrainian defender Serhiy Zholonko told how the operation took place, comparing it to World War II.

The military man published his memories on Facebook. According to him, the main difficulties for our defenders on the battlefield were enemy planes, some of which were repainted in the color of the AFU. They controlled the sky, our air defense did not reach, they flew very low.

The fighter began his memories from 5 am on August 29, 2022, our army was near the Ingulets River.

"On the road, still from Berezneguvate, sprinkles hostile arta, hundreds of our combat vehicles and thousands of people go to the crossings .... The "Kherson offensive" has begun. Visually - the Second World War", - noted Zholonko.

He brought to the front line ammunition load, provisions and other things needed by the fighters, and spent the night in a broken building under constant shelling.

Already on Aug. 30 at 6 a.m., Ukrainian fighters set up an antenna on a hill, again under enemy artillery fire.

"They begin to cover purposefully on us..., getting away, the road in the craters, dust impenetrable + ours put smoke traps, you can not see anything, continuously moving tanks, bechis and various small things.... Techik on such a road and at such a speed, perhaps, never traveled... Everything is normal... At the "base"," the military man described the events of that day.

All the next night, according to him, the artillery duels continued. The fighter also complained that in the morning he found a connection and called, because at that moment the mortar shelling began.

"At this moment the arrival of a mine, we all hide in the house as relatives, cuddling on the floor, start counting.... The 5th lays under the house, the sixth, thank God, did not wait.... We change the stash. We run over to a ruined hangar for cattle (some kind of workshop with the smell of g.) There we already found Vasil and Kolya, before the shelling both went to the wind behind this hangar ... Climbed (flew) into the broken windows..." - recalls the fighter painfully.

That day, the military also learned of two "200s" from the third company.

"Both, both young, one is definitely from Novoukrainka, flying into the trench. 300s somewhere 6. The night is traditionally turbulent, in the area of the crossing red glow," - said Zholonko.

On September 1, he went on duty again under the continuous cannonades and, remembering those events, compared them to Groundhog Day - a continuous repetition of the same terrible events. Then the military learned about one more casualty in their battalion. After that, the enemy staged an air raid.

"16.00. Learned terrible information: after the plane "worked" on us, further "worked" on the positions of 1 company.... 5-200th, 5-300th... I have friends in this company. ..., they say "Friendly Fire"! Who to believe - I don't know, I see one thing - the air is controlled by the eyes (UPD - it was russian planes from Crimea, painted under the AFU)," - said the military man.

Such "twin days" continued until September 8. That day around 1 a.m. Zholonko was concussed.

"I don't remember the time between the explosion from which I lost consciousness and the one that followed. Many exploding suns. Burning, solid dust, loss of orientation, vomiting.... Head splitting, pain... The hangar's gate concave, covered with stones. "Zhmerinka" was thrown by the blast wave under the shishar. If he had stayed a second longer outside - he would have been gone... He refused to be evacuated. He stood in the outfit until 6 am, his brain doesn't work..." - recalled the fighter. Only then he was taken to the medrotte.

"Put drips, long, a lot, annoys, returned to the medical platoon in the "Lavender". Worse. ...further as a stage - evacuation..." - told Zholonko.
