US and Britain privately give Ukraine permission for long-range strikes on Russia – The Guardian
The United States and the United Kingdom have authorized Kyiv to launch long-range missiles against targets in Russia's rear, but have not officially announced it. The deployment of such weapons should be part of a plan to stop the Russian invasion.
This was reported by The Guardian. Sources in the British government note that a decision has already been made to allow Ukraine to use British Storm Shadow cruise missiles against targets in Russia, although there has been no official public statement on this issue.
"The deployment of the missiles, Western officials add, should be part of a broader plan to end a full-scale war," the newspaper writes.
The British Storm Shadow missiles, manufactured by a European company, can hit targets at a distance of at least 290 miles. Ukraine plans to use them to attack air bases, missile bases, and other military facilities in the center of Russia.
Earlier, The Times reported that the United States would allow the Ukrainian Armed Forces to carry out long-range strikes on Russian territory only with British Storm Shadow and French Scalp missiles, as London and Paris support this approach. However, the use of American ATACMS missiles will remain prohibited, as Washington fears a possible escalation of the conflict.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, US President Joe Biden rejected the threats of Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, who threatened NATO with war if the allies allowed Ukraine to conduct long-range strikes on targets in Russia. The American leader said he was not thinking about it.
On September 11, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy visited Kyiv to participate in the Crimean Platform summit. According to media reports, during their meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the two diplomats were supposed to give Ukraine permission to use Western weapons to strike Russia.
