The Pentagon said that the United States is allowing Ukraine to use the weapons it has provided to strike the Kursk region. This is how the Ukrainian army defends its country against Russian attacks from this region.

This was stated by Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh at a briefing on Thursday, August 22. She noted that the US Department of Defense is now receiving more information about the actions of Ukrainians in the Kursk region.

Singh noted that the United States has not changed its policy on the use of its weapons against targets in Russia. And this policy allows Ukraine to return fire in self-defense against Russian attacks coming from the border regions.

"Our policy allows Ukraine to return fire to defend itself against Russian attacks coming from the border regions. And these border regions include Kursk. They also include Sumy. Thus, Ukrainians are defending themselves from Russian attacks in these regions," said Sabrina Singh.

She also noted that the Pentagon understands Ukraine's efforts to create a buffer zone in the Kursk region.

"When it comes to the Kursk region, we understand what President Zelenskyy said - that they want to create a buffer zone. We are still working with Ukraine on how this fits into its strategic goals on the battlefield," Singh added.

She also noted that the Pentagon is looking into Ukraine's real goals in conducting an offensive in the Kursk region.

"I can also inform you that Pentagon Chief Lloyd Austin intends to discuss with Kyiv partners whether the Ukrainian Armed Forces plan to hold territory in the Kursk region in the near future," Singh said.

As a reminder, according to an August 21 report by ISW analysts, the Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to advance in the Kursk region. The day before, the Ukrainian Armed Forces had been advancing along the entire Kursk salient and achieved additional success. The forces of the Russian aggressor country, in turn, are trying to fight back and withdraw their units from the encirclement.

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell called on Ukraine's partners to lift restrictions on the use of Western weapons for the Ukrainian army amid the events in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation. The EU foreign policy chief noted that Ukraine's military operation in Kursk region dealt a serious blow to Putin's narrative.

Denmark has allowed Ukraine to use the weapons it has been given on the territory of the aggressor country, Russia. Despite the operation of Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region, Copenhagen's support for Kyiv will remain absolutely unchanged.

The Spanish Defense Ministry believes that Ukraine should determine how and when to use the military equipment provided by Madrid. And Spain will continue to support Kyiv with important defense equipment.

The German Ministry of Defense stated that the German weapons received by the Ukrainian Defense Forces are becoming Ukrainian. It can be used as Kyiv sees fit. At the same time, long-range missiles are another political issue. This was stated by the spokesman for the German Ministry of Defense Arne Collatz.
