"Ukraine urgently needs them": Pentagon to buy missiles for Patriot and NASAMS for $2.2 billion
The Pentagon has announced the purchase of interceptors for the Patriot and NASAMS air defense systems for Ukraine. The amount of assistance is 2.2 billion dollars.
This is stated in the report of the US Department of Defense. In addition, the department added that it will purchase more than 2,000 Stinger portable air defense missile systems for Ukraine.
It is noted that the purchase of a significant package of air defense interceptors using about $ 2.2 billion will be carried out under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI).
"These funds will be used to purchase interceptors for the Patriot and NASAMS air defense systems for Ukraine," the statement said.
The agency reminded that the Biden administration plans to accelerate the delivery of these weapons by changing the priority of future deliveries to Ukraine under the Foreign Military Sales program.
"As a result, Ukraine will receive the interceptors it urgently needs to protect its people and critical infrastructure from Russian air attacks," the statement said.
The Pentagon also emphasized that the United States continues to work with its allies and partners to provide Ukraine with additional defense capabilities.
Earlier it became known that the White House announced a significant new defense assistance package for Ukraine. It will include missiles for HIMARS systems, air defense interceptors, artillery shells, and other weapons.
In addition, NATO allies agreed to finance military assistance to Ukraine of 40 billion euros ($43.05 billion) in 2025. The leaders of the Alliance member states will sign the relevant document at the summit to be held next week in Washington.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, the Pentagon said that the United States is still against strikes by American weapons deep into the Russian Federation. At the same time, the head of the House Intelligence Committee, Mike Turner, called for such a permit to be granted to Ukraine. This would allow the Ukrainian Armed Forces to strike at the enemy's current military targets, he explained.
On July 2, Umerov met with Pentagon Secretary Lloyd Austin in Washington, D.C. During the meeting, the US Secretary announced a new large package of US aid worth more than $2.3 billion.
