Ukraine sentences traitor who passed air defence data to Russia to 15 years in prison

Traitor who helped Russia strike Cherkasy region will spend 15 years in prison

A Russian agent who spied on air defence positions and checkpoints in the Cherkasy region was sentenced to 15 years in prison. The traitor-gunner was an employee of a local hospital who had been working for the enemy since November 2022 and gathering information for further Russian missile strikes on the region.

The enemy spy was detained by the SBU in January 2023, and the evidence they collected was enough for the court to sentence the traitor to a severe punishment. The SBU provided details.

"The Security Service has collected a comprehensive evidence base on another FSB agent. He was passing on to the occupiers the locations of air defence and checkpoints of Ukrainian defenders in Cherkasy region. SBU CI officers detained the offender in a special operation in January 2023. Based on the materials of the Ukrainian special service, the court sentenced him to 15 years in prison," the statement said.

An employee of a local hospital agreed to cooperate with the aggressor and help Russia in missile attacks in Cherkasy region, he had been working for the Russian special services since November last year.

Russian handlers instructed the traitor to photograph the locations of the Defence Forces' bases and movements in the region. The enemy was particularly interested in the combat positions of Ukrainian air defence, as well as the exact coordinates of checkpoints, the number of soldiers present there, their weapons and equipment.

"Another task set by the enemy was to collect information on mobilisation, the level of military training and motivation of Ukrainian defenders," the SBU added.

The traitor transmitted the collected data through an anonymous chat in one of the messengers, marking the location of objects on the map. Taking into account the coordinates he transmitted, the Russians planned missile strikes on the Cherkasy region.

"During a search of the traitor's residence, a mobile phone and a tablet with evidence of covert correspondence with the FSB were seized. A passport issued by the former USSR and pro-Kremlin symbols were also found. Based on the evidence collected, the court found the offender guilty under Part 2 of Article 111 of the Criminal Code (high treason committed under martial law). The investigation was conducted by SBU officers in the Cherkasy region under the procedural supervision of the regional Prosecutor's Office," the Service added.

Earlier, the SBU detained a Belarusian KGB agent who was spying abroad in northern Ukraine. A citizen of Belarus fought in Afghanistan during the Soviet era, which is why he came to the attention of the Belarusian secret service and was recruited at the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

He had been living in the Rivne region for a long time, and his task was to monitor defensive measures at the border and the movements of the Ukrainian Defence Forces.
