Ukraine may get "more concrete steps" for NATO membership at next Ramstein - WP

Ramstein to offer concrete steps for Ukraine's NATO membership - WP

The meeting of the Ramstein Contact Group on Ukraine's Defense is expected to result in concrete steps for Ukraine's membership in NATO. The event will take place next week in Germany at the initiative of US President Joe Biden.

The Washington Post writes about this, citing comments by a Western diplomat. He noted that the countries of the North Atlantic Alliance are considering offering Kyiv specifics on the path to future membership.

At the same time, the newspaper notes that such measures may not satisfy Ukraine's urgent requests and this will be an important signal for Ukraine.

"More than a week after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky presented his victory plan to end the war with Russia to senior US officials, the details of the strategy and how it was received remain vague. So Kyiv is trying to get additional international support just a month before the US elections," the article says.

Its authors suggested that this plan depends either on accelerated NATO membership or on mandatory security guarantees from Ukraine's Western partners.

WP writes that Ukrainian officials fear that the US presidential election could "call into question further security assistance". It is emphasized that the White House is avoiding decisions that could affect the election campaign of the Democratic Party.

"While Kyiv has no intention of giving up its territories, more and more Ukrainians are willing to make temporary compromises if they secure NATO membership or security guarantees from allies," The Washington Post said.

Kyiv political expert Mykola Davydyuk assured the publication that "no one is planning to abandon Ukraine," but it is definitely not among the top three problems for the United States.

For his part, a Western diplomat who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity said that Kyiv will have another chance to present a victory plan next week at a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Ramstein, Germany, which Biden will attend.

"After Zelenskiy failed to get the missile restrictions lifted, Kyiv may get some other help during the conference in Germany. In particular, NATO countries are considering ways to provide Ukraine with more concrete steps for future membership in the Alliance - although they probably still do not fulfill the urgent actions requested by Kyiv," he explained.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, the Financial Times described a hypothetical scenario for the end of the hot phase of the war in Ukraine - with territorial concessions and security guarantees. They stated that the allies are allegedly offering Kyiv "partial" accession to NATO based on the West German model.
