Ukraine applied its domestically-produced air defense system, "FrankenSAM," during the night: "Shahed" was destroyed at a distance of 9 kilometers
Kamyshyn spoke about the use of the "Frankenstein" air defense system in Ukraine

On the night of January 17, during an enemy drone attack on Ukraine, our military used the FrankenSAM system for the first time. It successfully shot down a Shahed drone from a distance of nine kilometers.

This announcement was made at a briefing in Davos by Oleksandr Kamyshyn, the head of the Ministry of Strategic Industries. FrankenSAM is a domestically-produced hybrid air defense system developed by Ukrainians.

Ukraine, in collaboration with the United States, has developed a new air defense system utilizing Soviet-era air defense technology.

Three SAMs were combined to create it:

- Soviet Buk SAM with American RIM-7 Sea Sparrow missiles,

- AIM-9M air-to-air missiles combined with Soviet radars,

- Air defense systems based on Ukrainian old systems with elements and missiles from Patriot.

According to Kamyshyn, Ukraine has "about 5 such projects," and all systems have already been deployed on the battlefield.

FrankenSAM is a joint US-Ukrainian development, known since 2023. Its main idea is to combine Western missiles with Soviet air defense systems available in Ukraine. The project aims to strengthen Ukraine's air defense against Russian attacks amid the depletion of Soviet missiles for Buk and other air defense systems.

As a reminder, the creation and successful testing of the "Frankenstein" air defense system were reported back in October 2023. The FrankenSAM program originated in 2022 when Ukrainian officials asked allies for help in finding missiles for 60 Soviet Buk missile launchers that were idle in the arsenal.

Realizing that it would be difficult for the West to obtain Russian-made ammunition for the Buk systems, Ukrainians offered to convert the launchers to use NATO-caliber anti-aircraft missiles donated by the United States.

Recommendations

As reported by OBOZ.UA, in December 2023, Kamyshyn said that domestically-produced hybrid air defense systems provide the country with quick solutions. They are already being used by our military and demonstrate the results of their work.
