UK to resume production of artillery barrels for Ukraine
The United Kingdom has found a way to resume the production of artillery barrels. First of all, they will be used to support Ukraine's artillery systems.
This was reported by the UK Ministry of Defense. The British company Sheffield Forgemasters, which can produce the largest and most technically complex cast and forged steel parts in the world, will help with the production of the barrels.
"This is the first step towards sovereign production of barrels in the UK," the ministry said.
Such support from the British industry will allow the Armed Forces of Ukraine to maintain vital systems, including L119 light howitzers and AS-90 self-propelled artillery systems.
Earlier, the United Kingdom announced that it would provide Ukraine with new barrels for the AS-90 self-propelled howitzers as part of its military assistance. The AS-90 is equipped with a 155-mm L31A1 gun with a barrel length of 39 caliber manufactured by BAE Systems Global Combat Systems.
At that time, it was already known that BAE Systems was no longer able to produce barrels for these artillery systems.
The United Kingdom found itself in a situation where part of its strategically important defense capabilities came to a standstill during the so-called post-Cold War global disarmament.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Prime Minister's residence on Downing Street on July 19 and called the meeting "historic." During the meeting, he promised that London would double its support for Ukraine.
