There should be concrete decisions, not statements: expert explains what is wrong with Western aid to Ukraine

The main support for Ukraine in the war against Russia should be concrete decisions of its partners and concrete arms deliveries, not their statements and "deep concern." Many Western politicians are still balancing between the fear of escalation and the desire to prevent the aggressor country from winning.

This was stated by Ihor Popov, an expert at the Ukrainian Institute for the Future, in a commentary to OBOZ.UA. "If the statements say that Ukraine is defending not only itself, but the whole of Europe, the whole of the Western world, then this is our common war. And then we really need to provide Ukraine with all the forces and means to stop Russian aggression, liberate its territories and really inflict a strategic defeat on the Russian Federation in Ukraine," he said.

"If these are just statements, they will not give our military enough means to realize these tasks.

According to Popov, many Western leaders are balancing between the fear of escalation and the desire to prevent a Russian victory. Given this, the scenario for many politicians is to continue the war in Ukraine and prevent this war from reaching the territory of NATO member states.

On the other hand, they do not provide Ukraine with enough means for our military to launch a serious offensive, which could allegedly increase the risks of escalation by Russia.

Popov also commented on the situation with US support for Ukraine, which Congress will consider after the Easter recess. "They really turned out to be more important than the approval of aid for our country, which is repelling Russian aggression. Nevertheless, the expert believes that Ukraine still has a chance to get it - the window of opportunity is April and May, i.e., the time before the active phase of the US elections.

"Of course, we would like the assistance to continue until the goals are achieved. And we understand that the closer we get to the US elections, not only the presidential elections, but also the elections of the Congress and part of the Senate, the less likely it will be that the Ukrainian issue will be on the agenda. Especially when the presidential debates begin, it is unlikely that anyone will want to change anything in the issue of assistance to Ukraine," he said.

According to Popov, Ukrainian diplomats are doing everything possible to get this assistance in any form.

As OBOZ.UA previously reported, in the third year of the full-scale war, Ukraine is taking steps to develop its military-industrial complex in order to avoid total dependence on Western aid. However, "time has been lost" and today the country cannot refuse it, and the delay of partners such as the United States is costly, said former Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Ihor Romanenko.
