The White House says Ukraine is effectively using cluster munitions on the battlefield
The administration of US President Joe Biden has confirmed that the Ukrainian Defence Forces are already using cluster munitions they received from the US on the battlefield. They said that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are "effectively using them" at the front.
At a briefing on Thursday, 20 July, White House National Security Advisor John Kirby said that cluster munitions "are in the hands of Ukraine and deployed in the field as part of Kyiv's fight against Russia". His words were quoted by Reuters.
"We have received some initial feedback from the Ukrainians, and they are using them quite effectively," Kirby said.
The American official added that these weapons are used against the defensive barriers of the Russian occupiers. As you know, Ukraine has pledged to use cluster munitions only to knock out clusters of enemy soldiers.
On the afternoon of 20 July, The Washington Post reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had already begun using cluster munitions provided by their American partners at the front. They were used, in particular, in the southeast of the country to destroy well-fortified Russian positions that slowed down Ukraine's counteroffensive.
They specified that the munitions were fired at the occupiers' trenches.
Ukraine has made a number of commitments regarding the use of cluster munitions. In particular, they will not be used in cities, and the areas where they will be used are to be demined first.
As OBOZREVATEL wrote, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that cluster munitions were needed by the Ukrainian Defence Forces, and the transfer of this type of munitions does not affect the "moral authority" of either Kyiv or Washington.
