The US is monitoring the situation around the ZNPP and has not yet detected any increase in radiation levels, Kirby

US reacts to reports of occupier mines at ZNPP

The administration of US President Joe Biden said that it was "closely monitoring" the situation around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant temporarily seized by the Russian occupants. The Ukrainian authorities earlier said that the Russians had booby-trapped the plant and might be preparing an act of terrorism.

US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told a briefing at the White House on 23 June that Washington cannot now confirm signs of rising radiation levels near the power plant in occupied Enerhodar, Ukrinform reported.

"We can monitor some of the radiation sensors that are around the power plant, and so far we have not detected any elevated levels of radioactivity," Kirby noted.

The White House spokesman stressed that Washington continues to monitor the situation closely.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry yesterday called on the IAEA and its Director General Rafael Grossi to react to the fact that the Russians were mining and militarizing the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. They recalled that according to the SDU, the Russian Federation was considering a scenario of a terrorist act at the plant.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier said that Russia might be preparing a terrorist act at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. The occupants have already prepared everything to commit a terrible crime.

The head of the GUR, Kyrylo Budanov, said that the Russian occupiers had additionally mined the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. Explosives have also been placed on the cooler, which "will cause serious problems" if damaged.

As OBOZREVATEL reported, IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi called the situation there "extremely unstable" after his visit to Zaporizhzhia. In his words, the loss of the Kakhovka reservoir was a disaster for Europe's largest nuclear power plant.
