"The conditions should be determined by Ukrainians": Stoltenberg calls on NATO Allies to support Ukraine's peace plan
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on NATO member states to support Ukraine's peace plan to end the war with Russia. According to him, only this plan can lead to long-term peace, not the initiatives put forward by China and Brazil.
He said this in an interview with Politico on Monday, September 30, the day before he resigned as Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance. He was responding to a question about Turkey's participation in the Friends of Peace initiative launched by China and Brazil last week.
"The Ukrainian Peace Initiative is an initiative that ensures that we have a process that can lead to a lasting peace. And, of course, it is the Ukrainians who ultimately have to decide what conditions are acceptable. They have been the victim of a full-scale invasion," Stoltenberg said.
As the newspaper reminded, a group of 17 countries has joined the Sino-Brazilian initiative, and Turkey is the only NATO member in this group. According to Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the Friends of Peace is "not a choice of parties to the conflict, not a confrontation of blocs, and not a replacement of existing platforms." The official said that as part of this initiative, the countries will promote "a political settlement of the war in Ukraine."
In Ukraine, Beijing's actions were characterized as disappointing and illogical. In May, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused China of trying to sabotage the peace summit in Switzerland, which Russia and China boycotted.
Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the Presidential Administration, previously criticized the "peace initiative" promoted by China and Brazil and said it looked more like support for Ukraine's surrender on Russia's terms than a genuine desire for peace.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, the Hungarian government intends to join the Chinese-Brazilian initiative "Friends of Peace" aimed at resolving the Russian-Ukrainian war. Budapest plans to attend the inaugural meeting of this initiative in New York.
