Russian army's advance near Avdiivka loses momentum: NYT names main reasons

Military experts explain why the Russian offensive in the Avdiivka sector has slowed down

The pace of the Russian aggressor army's advance near Avdiivka in the Donetsk region is slowing down after quick successes when the enemy managed to capture the city and several settlements around it. Military experts say there are several reasons for this development. In particular, the terrain, which is not conducive to offensive operations, plays a significant role.

The New York Times writes about this. Now the Russians have to conduct assault operations in open fields "with little cover."

"Russian troops seem to be trying to push forward using small infantry assault teams, but they are being destroyed in the relatively open terrain west of Avdiivka," Pasi Paroinen, an analyst at Black Bird Group, said.

Thus, while Russian troops are attacking Berdychi, Orlivka and Tonenke through open fields, Ukrainian units are holding the heights, which helps them eliminate the approaching occupiers.

It is also worth considering that the Russian troops who survived the capture of Avdiivka are exhausted from months of heavy fighting.

At the same time, Ukraine has sent significant forces to defend the area. The NYT writes that Kyiv has sent some of its best troops and weapons to the west of Avdiivka. In particular, it refers to the 47th Magura Brigade.

The Ukrainian army is "engaging all possible weapons" to fight the occupiers near Avdiivka, Serhii Kuzan, head of the public research group of the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation, said.

"The capture of Avdiivka did not lead to the fall of the Ukrainian defense lines, did not give the Russians the opportunity to enter the open territory or even achieve great success. There are no decisive actions or breakthroughs (by Russian troops - Ed.)," Thibault Fouillet, director of the US Institute for Strategic and Defense Studies, part of the French Research Center, stated.

As reported, the Russian occupiers are unable to break through the defense of the Ukrainian Armed Forces near Avdiivka. Despite the losses, the army of the aggressor state continues to advance in this direction on the frontline. Most of all, the enemy is "wiping out" the settlement of Orlivka.
