Russia is planning to deploy Ukrainian prisoners of war to fight against their homeland. For this purpose, they are creating a so-called "volunteer" battalion called Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, as part of their propaganda efforts.

In a report released on the morning of Wednesday, November 8, the Institute for War Studies revealed that the aggressor is likely to transfer this battalion to the "Special Military Operation" zone shortly. This action is a clear violation of the Geneva Convention on the treatment of prisoners of war, according to ISW analysts.

On November 7, RIA News propagandists reported that Ukrainian soldiers from the first unit of the Bohdan Khmelnytskyi battalion, composed of prisoners of war, had sworn allegiance to Russia. The Russian agency announced that these soldiers would soon be sent to the frontlines.

Most likely, they will be deployed to the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions, where active combat is taking place.

The battalion operates as part of the "Cascade" formation within the puppet "Donetsk People's Republic". Propaganda claims that the soldiers will allegedly receive equal treatment, including salaries and benefits.

Previously, Russian media outlets had reported that up to 70 Ukrainian prisoners of war from various Russian detention centers had been recruited for the war against Ukraine.

The Geneva Convention on Prisoners of War prohibits their use in military activities on the side of the capturing power, as emphasized by the Institute for the Study of War.

International norms dictate that no prisoner of war should ever be sent or held in areas where they may be exposed to hostilities. They should also not be engaged in work of a harmful or dangerous nature.

As reported by OBOZ.UA:

- ISW also highlighted that Russia is discussing the need to transition the economy onto a war footing to confront Ukraine.

- Assessing the situation on the battlefield, the Institute for the Study of War suggested that the Ukrainian Defense Forces might conduct larger-than-usual operations on the left bank of the Kherson region.
