Russia discredits the idea of nuclear disarmament: Dzherdzh explains why Ukraine has the right to discuss the restoration of nuclear weapons

Russia discredits the idea of nuclear disarmament

In the future, Ukraine has the opportunity to restore its nuclear potential, if the need arises. To accomplish this task, money and resources must be allocated.

However, at the moment, talk of nuclear weapons should be regarded simply as a political statement. Serhiy Dzherdzh, chairman of the NATO-Ukraine Civic League, said this in an interview with OBOZ.UA.

According to him, Ukraine has every right to discuss nuclear weapons, because our country had the world's third nuclear potential. However, Ukraine gave up its weapons of mass destruction as an example for nuclear disarmament around the world.

"Because there is such a general idea of nuclear disarmament that our planet should be free of nuclear weapons in the future. Therefore, we have taken a step towards this, we have set an example. But unfortunately, Russia simply discredits this idea of nuclear disarmament, because it turns out that a country that has gotten rid of nuclear weapons is attacked, wants to completely destroy it, kills its citizens, simply tortures them, takes children away, exploits them-everything that Russia is doing to Ukraine. Some statements about the need to destroy Ukrainian culture, the Ukrainian language, to destroy all Ukrainians," said Dzherdzh.

He emphasized that countries with nuclear weapons look at Russian aggression and realize that if they get rid of nuclear weapons, the same thing could happen to them. Dzherdzh noted that when Russia wins and gains something positive for itself in this war, it is a signal for many countries to create nuclear weapons.

Dzherdzh said that if Ukraine is offered options to realize the defense of the country, then there will be no need to talk about nuclear weapons. However, now our country can put this discussion on the agenda.

"This is a political signal that let's look for some options to realize the defense of Ukraine, then we will not have to talk about nuclear weapons. Until these options are found, we can put this discussion on the agenda. This does not mean that we will actually do it, but as a political statement, it has the right to exist. Especially... we had the Chornobyl disaster, we have nuclear power plants, we have uranium ore in the Yellow Waters, we had nuclear weapons, after all. So we can talk about this topic, and we have every reason to do so," said Dzherdzh.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that during a conversation with US presidential candidate Donald Trump, he emphasized the need for Ukraine to join NATO. According to Zelensky, otherwise Ukraine will be forced to develop nuclear weapons. Either NATO or nuclear capabilities - Ukraine has no other choice, Zelensky emphasized.

As a reminder, dictator Vladimir Putin, commenting on the possibility of Ukraine resuming its nuclear capabilities, called these statements "another provocation." He said that Russia would be able to track any steps Kyiv takes in this direction and would not allow the creation of nuclear weapons.
