Russia attacked Kyiv with drones on Holodomor anniversary: more than 60 targets destroyed over the capital, there are victims
In the early morning hours of November 25, when Ukraine commemorates the victims of the Holodomor of 1932-33, Russian troops attacked Kyiv with Iranian kamikaze drones from several directions. The air defense system in the capital responded: more than 60 enemy targets were shot down.
This was reported by the head of the Kyiv City Military Administration Serhii Popko. It also became known that debris fell in the Pecherskyi, Dniprovskyi, Holosiivskyi and Solomianskyi districts. A kindergarten building caught fire in the Solomianskyi district, with five people injured. There were also destructions.
Air defense forces effectively targeted enemy drones, which the enemy launched at the capital in several waves from different directions. The UAVs attacked Kyiv in waves in numerous groups, constantly changing their vector of movement. In total, 66 enemy drones were destroyed in the Kyiv region and over Kyiv during the six-hour alert, according to the data provided by the spokesman for the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Yurii Ihnat.
"Approximately 66 were destroyed in the Kyiv region. This is a huge number. We remember New Year's Eve well when 45 (Shahed drones - Ed.) were shot down on the outskirts of the capital. The same as the next day, 39. That is why it is a record number of UAVs launched by the enemy at the Kyiv region as of today," noted Ihnat.
According to him, Russia launched a total of 75 drones at Ukrainian territory during the latest attack, 71 of which were shot down by the defenders of Ukrainian skies.
Destruction and fires were recorded as a result of falling debris in several areas and five victims aged 11 to 65 were reported. Three of them, including a child, were diagnosed with acute stress reactions. Two more Kyiv residents had cut wounds to their limbs.
According to the Kyiv city RMA, as of 07:20, there were reports of debris falling in the Holosiivskyi district: it fell in a green area, and there were no casualties. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klychko reported that a piece of drone debris fell on a four-story residential building. Rescuers were immediately sent there.
A piece of debris fell on a high-rise building in the Dniprovskyi district. Initially, there were reports of a possible fire. But as of 7 am, there was no fire and no injuries.
The debris fell in an undeveloped area in the Pecherskyi district. According to preliminary data, the fall did not cause any serious consequences.
The State Emergency Service reported that the falling debris destroyed the roof of a kindergarten over an area of 100 square meters in the Solomyanskyi district. They extinguished a fire over an area of 2 square meters.
A piece of debris fell near a five-story building at another address in the same area, damaging 4 cars and shattering windows in the building on the 1st through 5th floors. Rescuers rescued two women on the second floor who were trapped in an apartment.
According to the Kyiv city RMA, over 40 enemy drones were shot down by air defense forces over the capital.
"According to preliminary information, two people were injured, both suffering acute stress reactions. This was the most massive attack on Kyiv over the past month," said Mykhailo Shamanov, a spokesman for the KIA.
At about 4 a.m., Popko warned that a large group of enemy drones was heading towards the capital from different directions.
"A large number of enemy UAVs are approaching Kyiv from different directions! We urge you to stay in shelters until the alarm goes off!" Popko's message, which was posted at 04:09, read.
When the Iranian drones reached Kyiv, the city's air defense system started working.
"Air defense is working in Kyiv. Stay in shelters," Popko wrote at 05:20.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klychko also wrote about the work of air defense. He noted that the defenders of the sky over the capital were shooting down air targets.
"It's loud in the capital. Air defense forces are shooting down Russian UAVs. Several more groups are heading towards Kyiv. Stay in shelters!" Klytchko wrote at 05:25.
He later reported that the wreckage of a downed kamikaze drone fell in one of the capital's districts.
"The wreckage of a downed UAV has fallen in the Pecherskyi district of the capital. All services are on the way. There are also medical calls in the Solomianskyi district. The crews are on their way," the mayor of the capital said.
At the same time, falling debris in the Solomianskyi district of the capital caused a fire in a kindergarten.
"As a result of the downing of enemy UAVs and falling debris in the Solomianskyi district, a fire broke out on the territory of a kindergarten. Information about the victims is being clarified. All emergency services are involved," the Kyiv city RMA said.
There was also an open-air fire in the area. Apartments' windows were damaged in some buildings.
"There were fires in several places in the Solomianskyi district: in a residential building and non-residential premises. An 11-year-old child was also injured. Acute stress reaction. Medics are providing assistance on the spot," Klychko said.
As of 06:30 a.m., at least two people were reported injured in Kyiv, both of whom were treated on the spot. One call for medical assistance was also registered in the Solomianskyi and Podilskyi districts.
"As a result of repelling an attack by enemy UAVs on Kyiv, a fire broke out in a non-residential building in the Solomianskyi district over an area of 100 m2. Information about the victims is being clarified. The enemy drone attack is not over yet. Stay in the shelters until the end of the attack," the Kyiv city RMA said at 06:34.
Klychko added that the second floor of a five-story building was damaged as a result of the falling debris in the Solomianskyi district. Rescuers are unblocking two women from there.
The wreckage of a downed UAV fell on a multi-story building in the Dniprovskyi district. Smoke was detected on the upper floors.
"Rescuers and medics are on their way," Klytchko assured.
However, the emergency services that arrived at the scene did not find any fire or victims in the high-rise.
"In a high-rise building in the Dniprovskyi district, a small piece of a drone fell on the stairwell of the top floor. There was no fire. No victims have been found so far. Rescuers are inspecting the roof and technical floor of the building," Klychko said at 07:15 am.
Kyiv residents also reported that part of the Pecherskyi and Dniprovskyi districts lost power during the attack.
Later, the Ministry of Energy said that 77 residential buildings and 120 institutions were cut off from power after the attack.
"On the morning of November 25, during a large-scale drone attack on the capital, an overhead line was cut off. As a result, 77 residential buildings and 120 institutions in the central part of the city lost power. The causes are being investigated. Restoration work is underway. 330 kV overhead lines were disconnected during the shelling in the Kyiv region. The preliminary reason is damage caused by shelling. An investigation to determine the cause is underway," the statement said.
As of 6 a.m., air defense forces continued to work, so Ukrainians were urged to stay in shelters and stay away from windows and glass.
"The attack from the northeast continues! As of now, drone groups are located in the west of the Sumy region, near Poltava, Myrhorod, near Nizhyn and east of Pryluky in the Chernihiv region, in the south of the Kyiv region, near Obukhiv, above and around Kyiv," the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported at 06:19.
A minute later, they added that several more groups of kamikaze drones had entered the airspace of the Sumy region from the Kursk region.
And at 07:15, the Air Force reported another group of drones heading towards Kyiv from the northeast.
As a reminder, on November 24, Russian troops launched ballistic missiles at Ukraine. An air alert was declared in the eastern and southern regions, and a few minutes later an explosion was reported in Pavlohrad, Dnipro region.
