Putin wanted to declare the invasion of Ukraine a personal geopolitical victory, but "missed the mark": ISW points to "loosening up" in Russia

Putin wanted to declare the invasion of Ukraine a personal geopolitical victory

Vladimir Putin, Russia's chief war criminal, decided to launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 without a clear and doctrinal command structure. The dictator was afraid that some of the military commanders might attribute their successes in the war to himself and expected to declare the invasion of Ukraine a personal geopolitical victory.

However, the Kremlin assassin's sick fantasies only resulted in the Russian occupation army becoming more fragmented and the command structures becoming disorganized. This is according to an analysis by the Institute for the Study of War.

During the 14 months of the war, Putin regularly approved command changes in the leadership of the Russian army, but the constant personnel reshuffles only undermined the Russian armed forces to fight a cohesive war in Ukraine. ISW analysts believe that the dictator's desire to take full military credit for himself has led to a disintegration within the Russian military and political command.

Along with this, experts note that the Defense Ministry and the Kremlin intentionally do not disclose most of the changes in the command of the Russian army, so the official statements of the aggressor country about the appointment or dismissal of generals are only a part of personnel changes.

ISW stressed that dictator Putin's reluctance to appoint a chief theater commander for the invasion of Ukraine has had a cascading effect on the Russian armed forces, including fomenting intense factional divisions, disorganizing command structures, and feeding unfulfilled expectations.

In April 2022, Western officials reported that Russia had not had a single commander of its forces in Ukraine since the invasion began. This is because the dictator sought to portray himself as the commander-in-chief and mastermind of the successful invasion of Ukraine. The Kremlin assassin expected that Russian troops would capture Kyiv in a matter of days, and he would declare the invasion a personal geopolitical victory.

Moreover, Putin did not want to appoint a commander for the invasion of Ukraine in order to avoid attributing military victory in Ukraine to anyone other than himself. ISW analysts found similarities in Putin's actions to the situation between Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin and Marshal Georgy Zhukov during World War II. Experts recalled that back then Stalin had limited military experience and was jealous of Zhukov's military exploits and glory. Russia's modern dictator Putin has no military experience, which may have further influenced his decision not to appoint a commander for the invasion of Ukraine who could have sidelined him by claiming credit for the expected victory.

As a reminder, dictator Vladimir Putin ordered additional changes in the military command and officially dismissed the head of the Eastern Military District, Rustam Muradov, as well as the former commander of the war against Ukraine, Alexander Dvornikov. The first top occupant "utilized" the Russian army near Ugledar in Donetschina, while the second was also noted for his alcohol abuse.

Earlier, it was reported that there is an ongoing struggle for power in the aggressor country of Russia. A coup d'état in Russia is theoretically possible, but it is unlikely to happen in practice . A coup can only be carried out by the security forces - the army or the Federal Security Service.

As OBOZREVATEL reported, the Kremlin dictator has become withdrawn, silent, unsociable, and his doubles are increasingly being released for official meetings.
