War in Ukraine
"Putin has a problem": Biden answers whether he sees sense in talks with Kremlin chief
US President Joe Biden sees no point in negotiations with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. Any talks will be useless until the Russian leader is ready to "change his behavior."
Russia is currently facing significant problems because of the war in Ukraine, and all the stories about the "successes" of Russian troops on Ukrainian soil are the result of the Kremlin's total control of the media and large-scale disinformation. Biden said this during a press conference in Washington following the NATO summit, Voice of America reports.
According to the US president, he is not ready for talks with Putin at the moment, as he considers them meaningless.
"I am not ready to talk to Putin because he is not ready to change his behavior," Biden said.
According to the American leader, the Russian dictator has a serious problem: Putin cannot boast of military success "in this war that he supposedly won."
"Russia used to have 17.3% of the occupied territory of Ukraine, and now it has 17.4% of the territory," Biden emphasized.
The US President emphasized that Russia has caused "terrible damage" to Ukraine and killed many Ukrainians. However, it has also suffered serious losses. According to Biden, more than 350,000 Russian occupiers were killed or wounded during the full-scale invasion. And more than a million Russians, mostly young people "with technical skills," have left Russia because they see no future there.
Therefore, the successes that Russian propaganda is desperately trying to convince both Russians and the world of are based on disinformation and the Kremlin's tight control of the information field in Russia.
"They have problems. But what they manage to do is control the public reaction, the information that reaches people. They lie to their voters about the state of the world, they lie about what is happening. Therefore, the idea that we will be able to fundamentally change Russia in the near future is unlikely," Biden said.
He also said that the West must contain Russia for its security, as Moscow is pursuing imperialistic plans far beyond Ukraine.
"One thing is for sure: if we allow Russia to succeed in Ukraine, they will not stop at Ukraine. I recommend reading Putin's speech after they invade Ukraine, what it was all about. Read what his goal is," the US president emphasized.
He added that he was ready to talk to any leader, even Putin if he wanted to negotiate. However, Biden recalled that experience shows that negotiations with the current Russian leader made little sense. All previous attempts at dialog with the Russian dictator, including an arms control agreement that includes nuclear weapons in space, "did not go very far."
Earlier, Biden said at the NATO summit that Ukraine is capable of stopping Putin and promised assistance.
"Putin's aggressive war against Ukraine continues, and Putin wants nothing less than to subjugate Ukraine and end its democracy, destroy its people, and culture, and wipe the country off the map. We know he will not stop with Ukraine, but make no mistake," Biden said.
At the same time, he emphasized: "Ukraine can and will stop Putin," and Russia is losing the war. This is evidenced by the losses of the aggressor state over two years of full-scale aggression, which Biden called "staggering."
