According to Radio Liberty, all windows and doors in the building have been broken, there is damage in all halls, furniture and an antique glass lantern have been damaged. According to the director of the House of Scientists, "practically everything we see here of value has been damaged."

The building of the House of Scientists was erected in 1832 according to the project of architect Boffo. Later this building was bought by the Russian Count Tolstoy. An annex for an art gallery was erected under his auspices.

After the Bolsheviks seized Odessa, the First Folk Museum was opened in the building of the Tolstykh mansion, after which the Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art was located there. And since 1934 the building became the House of Scientists.

During World War II, when the defense of Odessa was underway, a bomb hit the house adjacent to the House of Scientists, but the building itself only blew out the glass. During the occupation, the German military commandant saved the building from being looted by Romanian soldiers. The House of Scientists worked until the end of the occupation, and in March 1944, the Germans, retreating, were going to blow up the building. But the mines were defused and the House of Scientists was saved once again.

There are a number of iconic rooms in the building. For example, in the White Hall with Venetian mirrors and oak parquet of 22 kinds of wood were filmed scenes of the Soviet movie about the Three Musketeers: The House of Scientists there played the role of the Louvre. And in the Marble Drawing Room there is a restored grand piano by Franz Liszt, which was left in the city after the great musician's tour in 1847.
