The Russian military command began to take harsher measures against soldiers who refused to follow orders, broke discipline, or otherwise misbehaved. Some occupiers were put in zindans, improvised prison cells that look like holes in the ground covered with metal bars.

This was stated by British intelligence. The relevant report was published April 30 on the Twitter page of the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

"In recent months, Russian commanders have probably begun to punish for breaches of discipline by imprisoning guilty soldiers in zindanahs," the spies noted.

They drew attention to information from the Russian side. Many reports say similar cases - that soldiers were put in zindangs for various misdeeds, including drunkenness and attempts to terminate the contract.

According to British intelligence, in the first months of the full-scale war, many Russian commanders "took discipline relatively lightly, allowing those who refused to serve in the army to return home.

Since the fall of 2022, however, several increasingly draconian initiatives have been introduced to improve discipline in the Russian Armed Forces.

Since January 2023 Valery Gerasimov, head of the Russian General Staff, assumed command of the operation. This, too, probably influenced stricter discipline requirements among the invaders.

We should add that zindan as a traditional prison existed in Central Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iran, Azerbaijan, and partially in the North Caucasus. The simplest version of such a dungeon is a deep pit with sloping walls that closes at the top.
