On the night of Thursday, 20 July, Russian occupation forces attacked Ukrainian cities with drones and missiles: Odesa region came under fire for the third day, causing destruction in the city and region, and a casualty. In Mykolaiv, a residential building burned down as a result of a drone strike, killing two people and injuring many others.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the occupiers launched a total of 38 cruise missiles and kamikaze drones at Ukraine, of which 18 were shot down. Due to falling debris and Shahedi hits, there are also destructions in Sumy and Chernihiv regions (to see photos and videos, scroll down to the bottom of the news).

"It's a hellish night for our people! The enemy is running amok and bombing civilian objects and residential buildings. Mykolaiv, Odesa, Sumy, Chernihiv and Donetsk region came under massive shelling last night. In Mykolaiv, a rescue worker was injured while extinguishing a fire. Emergency workers rescued two people and evacuated 30 residents of the building," commented SES Head Serhiy Kruk.

Attack on Odesa

A series of loud explosions in Odesa occurred after 02:40. The Air Force reported that the enemy had launched Oniks missiles towards Odesa region. The head of the ULA, Oleh Kiper, confirmed the explosions and called for the air defence to remain operational.

Later, he noted that the Russian attack had caused destruction in the centre of Odesa, with a fire starting on an area of 300 square metres. Specialists from the relevant services were working at the scene.

Two people are known to have been injured. In addition, according to Kiper, there is an arrival in the region.

The footage posted online shows that windows and a lot of glass were smashed in the buildings around the site of the destruction in Odesa.

Natalia Gumenyuk, a spokeswoman for the Joint Coordination Press Centre of the Southern Defence Forces, said during the telethon that an administrative building in the centre of Odesa was destroyed. Many nearby houses were also damaged, with at least four people injured.

According to her, the attacks in the region mostly hit warehouse facilities, and there is no information about the victims.

The head of the State Emergency Service, Serhiy Kruk, said that a four-storey building in Odesa was partially destroyed. Four people were injured, including a child. A rescuer also suffered heatstroke while extinguishing the fire.

"Overnight, a total of 174 rescuers and 44 units of SES equipment were engaged to eliminate the consequences of enemy attacks. Guys, thank you for your service!" he said.

After 11:00, it became known that one person was killed in the Russian attack in Odesa. According to the head of the Regional Military Administration, Oleh Kiper, he was a guard at a civilian building.

Shelling of Mykolaiv

After 03:00, it was loud in Mykolaiv - according to monitoring channels, the occupiers attacked the region with X-22 missiles.

The head of the Regional Military Administration, Vitaliy Kim, said that the enemy struck the city centre, and a fire broke out in a three-storey building. 18 people were injured, including five children - one child is under one year old.

In the morning, it was clarified that two people, whose deaths were assumed, had been miraculously rescued from the rubble.

Later, the number of victims increased to 19. Also, as of 16:35, two people have been reported dead as a result of the Russian attack. Russia killed an elderly couple: the husband's body was found in the morning, while rescuers, according to Mykolaiv regional police chief Serhiy Shayhet, found his wife in the evening.

The mayor of Mykolaiv, Oleksandr Senkevych, said he had arrived in the city centre. According to him, at least five multi-storey residential buildings were damaged and cut off from power supply for the rescue and search operation.

At another address, about 15 garages were damaged, and windows in several high-rise buildings were smashed.

Shahed hit in Sumy

Around 01:30, explosions were heard in Sumy, which were confirmed by the Sumy Regional Military Administration, which said that air defence was working.

In the morning, they reported that the defenders had shot down one and hit another Shahed drone. At the same time, the third hit the building of an out-of-school recreation centre. As a result, the building of the institution (a children's camp) was damaged and caught fire. An ambulance crew treated a nurse at the scene.

Shelling of Chernihiv region

Last night, the enemy mercilessly attacked Semenivka in Chernihiv region with Shahed kamikaze drones. According to the head of the Regional Military Administration, Vyacheslav Chaus, there were hits to residential buildings, the number of victims is being clarified. Residents have been relocated.

At night, the occupiers attacked Novhorod-Siverska community 14 times: 14 parishes were hit by artillery, 36 by MLRS; seven by mortars; three by allegedly unguided aerial missiles launched from a helicopter.

Air defence performance

On the night of 20 July, Ukrainian defenders shot down five Russian air- and ground-launched cruise missiles and 13 kamikaze drones in the skies over a number of regional centres. In total, Russian troops attacked 38 targets, hitting ports, marinas, residential buildings and retail chains, mostly in Odesa and Mykolaiv.

As a reminder, on the night of 19 July, Russia launched another combined attack on Ukraine. The main target of the attack was Odesa region - the enemy launched Kalibr cruise missiles and attack drones towards the region.

The ports of Odesa and Chornomorsk came under attack, damaging the grain terminals of international and Ukrainian traders and carriers Kernel, Viterra, CMA CGM Group, as well as port infrastructure.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, Ukraine's Minister of Agrarian Policy Mykola Solsky said that Russia's missile strikes on the Odesa and Chornomorsk ports had already destroyed 60,000 tonnes of grain. The infrastructure involved in the grain deal was also damaged.
