"Negotiations are needed": Czech President says Ukraine can join NATO with temporarily occupied territories

Czech President Petr Fiala believes that Ukraine's accession to NATO should not depend on the de-occupation of its territories. He is convinced that the country can be accepted within the borders it will control at that time.

The Czech leader expressed this opinion in a joint interview with the Czech media Novinky and Pravo. Therefore, the full restoration of Ukraine's control over its entire territory is not a "prerequisite" for NATO membership, Fiala said.

"If there is a demarcation, even of some administrative border, we can accept this administrative border as a temporary one and accept Ukraine into NATO on the territory it will control at that time," he explained.

The Czech President drew parallels with Germany, which joined NATO in 1955, although part of its territory was occupied by the USSR until 1990. Fiala expressed confidence that it is possible to admit Ukraine to the Alliance without dragging the organization into a direct confrontation with Russia. However, he added that this is possible only after negotiations between Kyiv and Moscow begin.

In late July, more than 150 scientists from around the world sent an open letter to the North Atlantic Alliance calling for Ukraine's membership. They are convinced that the terrorist state is only opposed because it will prevent its further aggression. In fact, Russia is fully determined to destroy our country and does not need additional motivation to do so.
