Events in Russia's Kursk region could potentially affect possible negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. This will make the Kremlin realize that the war is not going according to its scenario.

This was stated by Mykhailo Podoliak, advisor to the head of the Presidential Office, speaking on the air of a telethon on the evening of August 7. We emphasize that the representative of the Presidential Office did not confirm that the Defense Forces are engaged in combat operations on the territory of the Russian Federation. Only the Ukrainian military leadership can comment on these details.

Podolyak said that now "the effectiveness of the tool called combat operations is gradually increasing."

The events in Kursk "will influence how Russians realize this war." This means

– additional losses of the aggressor state;

– increase in the cost of war;

– psychological impact on social strata in Russia.

"Any compromise is perceived by the Russian Federation as your weakness and willingness to kneel before it. This is obvious. And when you negotiate on the terms of the Russian Federation (they may initially make very exorbitant demands, then lower them a bit), they will still believe that they dominate the negotiation process.

When will they be able to sit at the negotiating table and get something, to push for something? Only if they realize that the war is not going according to their scenario," explained the advisor to the head of the OP.

Recommendations

– ISW analysts drew attention to Moscow's contradictory reaction. The Kremlin is trying to find a balance between presenting a noticeable escalation on the part of Ukraine and avoiding exaggerating the potential consequences.
