"We do not consider this": Germany reiterates its opposition to Ukraine using its weapons on Russian territory
Germany has once again spoken out against Ukraine's use of its weapons on the territory of the aggressor country Russia. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is not ready to change his mind about the use of Western, in particular German, weapons to attack military targets in Russia.
He made the statement during a press conference after the summit of the European Political Community. This was reported by Ukrinform.
"I see a consensus that such steps are not being considered, including by the United States," the politician said.
Scholz commented on the call by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to lift restrictions on the use of Western weapons against military targets in Russia.
"I recall what we have agreed upon among ourselves, in particular in the G7 circle, and during the talks we recently held in Washington, namely that Ukraine will continue to receive support," the chancellor said about further assistance for our country.
Earlier, the media reported that during the NATO summit in Washington, D.C., German Chancellor Olaf Scholz rejected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's proposal to lift all restrictions on the use of Western weapons in the war with Russia. Scholz explained his decision by the need to avoid NATO's involvement in the conflict.
Earlier, the leader of the largest opposition party in Germany, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), Friedrich Merz, said that Berlin could not stand aside in the issue of transferring combat aircraft to Ukraine. He emphasized that Germany should join its partners and help Ukraine regain control of the sky.
A government representative responded by saying that Germany would not provide Ukraine with Western-style fighters, citing a shortage of aircraft. They also noted that there was "no point in such military assistance on their part."
