In Russian Engels complained about the drone attack, an air base could have been hit: it was a DIU operation
The city of Engels in the Saratov region of the Russian Federation was attacked by drones on the morning of March 20. The Defense Intelligence of Ukraine said that enemy targets were hit.
The UAVs could have attacked the Engels-2 airbase of the Russian Aerospace Forces, which is located near the city. Ukrainian intelligence sources told OBOZ.UA that it was a planned work of the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine, and the results of the attack are currently being clarified.
According to the Russian media, the attack of 4 drones on Engels, Saratov region, took place on the morning of March 20 at 5:36 am. 3 of the 4 downed drones fell on the territory of the Engels 1 military airfield. There were no casualties, and no damage is known at this time. At the same time, the Russian Ministry of Defense hastily reported that all 4 UAVs were shot down.
Residents say they heard at least 4 explosions.
Earlier, the governor of the Saratov region, Roman Busargin, said that there were no casualties and no damage to infrastructure.
"A UAV was eliminated over Engels. The air defense system worked in a timely and effective manner. There were no casualties and no damage to infrastructure when the debris fell," the governor said.
The explosions were recorded on an intercom camera. The characteristic hum of an engine and the sound of air defense systems can be heard.
At the same time, the Russian Defense Ministry said that all 4 Ukrainian drones were allegedly shot down over the region.
"Five Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles were destroyed by air defense systems over the territories of Belgorod (1 UAV) and Saratov (4 UAVs) regions," the ministry said.
Probably, the target of the drones was the base of the Russian Aerospace Forces, which is located near the city. Russian planes take off from this base to attack targets in Ukraine.
According to satellite imagery obtained by Radio Liberty's Schemes project, on March 19, 2024, 11 aircraft were at the airfield, including 9 bombers: 6 Tu-95s (one of which was inoperable) and 3 Tu-160s.
Russians who live near the air base say they have heard one to five arrivals and something exploding afterward.
