On the night of July 23, the Russian terrorist army launched another missile attack on Odesa. As a result of the terrorist attack, the UOC-MP Savior-Transfiguration Cathedral was destroyed.
In addition to the cathedral building, Orthodox shrines were also damaged. The Kasper icon of the Mother of God, which is the patroness of Odesa were pulled out under the rubble. This was reported in the Odesa City Council (to see photos and video, scroll to the end of the page).
According to Andriy Palchuk, a cleric of the Odesa diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, the Russian missile hit the right side of the cathedral and pierced the building through to the ground floor. As a result, the cathedral suffered significant damage and a fire started inside.
"The destruction is colossal. Half of the cathedral was left without a roof. The central piles, the foundation have been broken. All the windows flew out, the stucco as well. There was a fire as the part where icons and candles that are sold in the church caught fire. After the end of the air raid alarm the State Emergency Service came and extinguished everything," Palchuk said in a commentary to "Suspilne Novyny".
A representative of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army "South" Serhiy Bratchuk said on the air of the TV marathon that the Savior-Transfiguration Cathedral was destroyed by the Soviet authorities in the 20th century, but then the temple was rebuilt by the forces and funds of Odesa residents.
In 1936 the cathedral was destroyed. At first the Soviet authorities looted the cathedral, taking out everything to slabs of marble and granite and then dismantled it to the ground. This is confirmed by the fact that, as modern excavations have shown, the foundation of the cathedral remained intact.
Before that, under pressure from those interested in the destruction of the cathedral, the chief architect of the city signed a decree that the cathedral was of no architectural value.
Bolshevik authorities of the city decided to build an entertainment place on the place of the cathedral, with the place of the main altar to be a toilet. The patronage of academician Volodymyr Filatov only saved the holy place from desecration, with a fountain with a large marble vase in the form of a flower installed on the place of the altar. Dozens of years later, Russian terrorists repeated the deed of the Soviet authorities, but this time they destroyed the cathedral with the help of missiles.
This is the view the cathedral had before the overnight Russian terrorist attack.
