National Guard explains why Shaheds fly deep into Ukraine

Russian troops have recently increased the number of attacks with Shahed-136 strike UAVs in Ukraine – the enemy launches kamikaze drones every day, both at night and during the day. In addition, there have been more cases of Shaheds flying deep into Ukraine to major cities, including Kyiv.

This is primarily due to the number of air defense systems in the Defense Forces, said the chief sergeant of the anti-aircraft missile artillery battery of the Rubizh Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine, call sign Bandurist. The video was posted on the brigade's YouTube channel.

"I wish we had an anti-aircraft gun every 3 km, but we don't have that many. Mobile fire groups are a very effective cool thing. But the person who programs the Shahed opens the program, he has a map and an elevation map on another screen. He or she lays out routes for himself or herself, constantly changing them. If you look, there are several specific places where they usually fly into Kyiv. They are always shot down in these places, but they still go there. And there are some who have been routed 3 kilometers to the side or at the lowest possible altitude," the military noted.

He also explained that enemy strike UAVs or missiles can hit high-rise buildings because the route they were programmed for does not include a building.

Anti-aircraft gunner Jerry, for his part, noted that Shaheds can fly at low altitudes or fly into ravines, and then radar systems cannot see them. In this case, the UAVs get lost and then appear, for example, 5 km to the right.

"You were standing and catching him on one route, and he changed abruptly, disappeared on the map, and appeared 5 km to the right, you can't catch him anymore. There are also cunning people fighting there," the National Guard member explained.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, in September 2024, Russian occupation forces attacked Ukraine daily with Shahed drones. In total, Russia launched 1339 attack drones during the month.
