Germany has handed over IRIS-T SLM (medium-range) and SLS (short-range) air defense systems to Ukraine. This happened last week.

The announcement was made by Major General Christian Freuding, who heads the Special Staff for Ukraine at the German Ministry of Defense. An interview with him was published by RND on October 9.

The interviewer asked whether Berlin could continue to contribute to supporting Kyiv in the same way as before."We are working at a high level and we will maintain this high level. Only in the last week we have delivered two Iris-T SLM and SLS anti-aircraft systems," the major general replied.

He assured that by the end of the year, Germany will provide the Ukrainian military with two more air defense systems.

Also, supplies of artillery ammunition, "double-digit numbers" of light armored vehicles, and main battle tanks will continue, Freiding said.

"The federal government remains united in its support for Ukraine," he assured.

To add: Germany is sticking to its plan to supply IRIS-T air defense systems. A total of 12 systems will be delivered to Ukrainian defenders. It is planned that the first half will be in our country by the end of this year.

IRIS-T (Infra Red Imaging System Tail) was integrated into the Ukrainian air defense system in October 2022.

This is a short- and medium-range air and missile defense system designed to destroy airplanes, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles.

The system consists of three main components: a launcher on the chassis of a MAN SX 45 (8x8) truck with space for eight missiles, a radar unit, and a control unit.
