The BMD-2 airborne combat vehicle is the main combat vehicle of Soviet-made airborne and airmobile troops. The vehicle is tracked, armored, floating, airborne, and can be landed by parachute, parachute-jet, and landing methods.
The main feature of the new airborne fighting vehicle, unlike the BMD-1, is a new weapon system that is identical to the armament system of the BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicle: a 30-mm automatic cannon 2A42, a 7.62-mm twin PKT machine gun, and a 9M113 ("Konkurs") or 9M111 ("Bassoon") anti-tank guided missile launcher. In addition, only one (right) 7.62-mm PKT course machine gun was left behind.

Later, the Russian Defense Ministry stated that "no violation of the state border was allowed" and claimed that there were no representatives of Russian volunteer units fighting on the side of Ukraine on Russian territory. In response, Russian volunteers began posting footage of battles in the settlements of Belgorod and Kursk regions and claimed to have spent the night of March 13 on Russian territory.
