France on the tasks of the artillery coalition for Ukraine
French General Jean-Michel Guilloton took the lead of the Artillery for Ukraine coalition, which was launched on January 18 by French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu. Its goal is to strengthen military support for Kyiv.
The general presented the coalition at a press conference at the French Defense Ministry, according to the ministry's website. He explained that in the current war, mass is becoming one of the keys to success, both in terms of the number of launchers and the tonnage of shells.
"The Artillery Coalition is a way to further structure the assistance that allies provide to Ukraine," the general explained.
According to him, this coalition "has two horizons": short-term and long-term. First of all, the primary needs of Ukrainians need to be met, which is ammunition and maintenance .
"At the moment, it is mainly about ammunition to balance the balance of power, which is almost 1:6 in favor of the Russians. This means that when six Russian shells fall on Ukrainian positions, Ukrainians can only respond with one shell. The second urgent need, he said, is maintenance to restore the functionality of the broken equipment," Lecornu noted.
In the long term, the coalition aims to help Ukraine create the artillery of the future and bring it in line with NATO standards.
"This will require a real transformation as many parts from the Soviet era are used in its artillery. With this in mind, we need to train not only the users of the transferred equipment but also technicians, department heads, staff officers, guidance and targeting specialists," Lecornu explained.
On January 18, an "artillery coalition" to strengthen Kyiv's capabilities in the war against Russia was launched in Paris. However, Ukraine's Defense Minister Rustem Umerov canceled his visit to France for this event "for security reasons." He took part in the event online.
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that it was necessary to increase arms production in order to achieve an increase in the supply of weapons to help Ukraine. He emphasized that Russia should not be allowed to think that it can win the war.
