'First such war': Main Directorate of Intelligence chief points out key feature of Russian aggression against Ukraine

Russia's war against Ukraine was the first military conflict in which "absolutely all types of weapons" were used, from submarines to strategic bombers. And even this did not give the aggressor state a decisive advantage: during the full-scale war, the military power of the Russian Federation was significantly undermined, and the professional army ended in the literal sense of the word.

This was stated by Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, during the annual meeting of the Yalta European Strategy. He is sure that Russia is significantly inferior to Ukraine in creativity and flexibility on the battlefield, but noted that the aggressor state is still a super-serious opponent that should not be underestimated.

According to Budanov, the war against Ukraine, which the Kremlin envisioned as a factor in strengthening the Russian Federation, has become a trap for Russia, siphoning off its economic, financial and military "juices."

"The war has not gone in favor of Putin's regime: the economy is not holding out, that's a fact. Finances are held on reserves, and military power has lost a lot during the war. The professional army, in a general sense, ended last fall. They are now fighting mobilized troops. The production of new weapons and equipment is at a completely insufficient level," Budanov formulated his vision of the consequences for the Russian Federation of a year and a half of full-scale aggression against Ukraine.

He is skeptical about talk of a possible further escalation on the part of the Russian Federation, as it has already used almost all types of available weapons.

"What kind of escalation can we talk about if absolutely all types of weapons are involved: from submarines to strategic bombers. We need to change the logic: not everything is in the hands of the Russian Federation, and not everything is in the hands of other players on the world stage, something depends on us," Budanov said.

However, despite this, the head of the Main Directorate of Intelligence emphasized, it would be a big mistake for Ukrainians to fall into euphoria and underestimate the enemy: Russia still poses an extraordinary threat to Ukraine.

"In terms of creativity and flexibility, we are still beating Russia. Putin's regime is not so powerful anymore. But it's still an insurmountable enemy and you can't just say they're doing absolutely bad. They are adapting. It's good to build more than one line of defense. But our movement continues!" - Budanov shared his thoughts.

We will remind, earlier the head of the Main Directorate of Intelligence assured that the counter-offensive of Ukraine will continue in cold, wet weather, although it will create additional difficulties for the soldiers. This statement was made against the background of the words of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States Mark Milley that weather conditions will allow the Ukrainians to continue the offensive operation for a maximum of one and a half months.

Budanov is also convinced that Russia does not have enough forces for a long war. Therefore, it will not drag on for years more, as predicted by a number of military and political analysts. Data from the Ukrainian military intelligence shows that the Russian Federation has no resources for the long term, and the available ones are being depleted day by day.
