"Everyone will return to the Russian market": Fico publicly calls on Europe not to support Ukraine
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has called on Europe not to support Ukraine in its war against Russia. According to him, after Donald Trump wins the presidential election, the United States will pay more attention to protecting its own interests.
The Prime Minister also expects that after the war is over, Europe will cooperate with Russian markets. Fico said this in the Saturday Dialogues program on Slovak radio.
Fico said that Trump's victory in the presidential election means that the United States will pay more attention to protecting its own companies. According to him, Trump prefers tariffs and customs to wars, which he has already demonstrated when withdrawing troops from Afghanistan.
In addition, the Slovakian prime minister added that Trump's victory should bring a certain result in ending the war. At the same time, he said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is allegedly afraid of the end of the war.
"Now let's assume that something like this is happening. Europe everywhere says that Russia should lose, and we support Ukraine. Is Europe ready to bear all the costs of the war in Ukraine? Europe cannot admit that this reasoning is wrong," he said. Fico emphasized that the US could significantly reduce its support for Ukraine as early as next year.
Fico noted that if the US turns away from the war and Europe continues to support Ukraine, it will be a "big mistake." The Prime Minister said that European countries "must move towards peace and stop the killing".
"Slovakia has the right to maintain sovereign relations with all four world parties. What will happen when the war is over? Everyone will return to the Russian market. So why shouldn't we have standardized relations with Russia as well," the prime minister said.
As a reminder, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban unexpectedly admitted that only Ukrainians should decide whether to continue the war or enter into peace talks with Russia. He said that Hungary was ready to help in a "neighborly" way.
Earlier, former advisor to US President-elect Donald Trump, Brian Lanza, said that the new administration would focus on achieving peace in Ukraine, rather than on giving Kyiv the opportunity to return the territories occupied by Russia. The US priority is to "stop the killing".
