Egypt abandons plan to supply Russia with 40 thousand missiles and decides to produce artillery shells for Ukraine - WP
Egypt suspended its plan to secretly supply missiles to Russia and decided to produce artillery ammunition for Ukraine instead. This happened after talks with high-ranking U.S. officials.
This was reported by The Washington Post, citing US intelligence documents. It is noted that earlier it became known about another document, according to which Egyptian President Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi was going to supply Russia with up to 40,000 122-mm Sakr-45 missiles that could be used in Russian multiple launch rocket systems.
However, new documents obtained by the newspaper show that Sisi abandoned his plans to supply Moscow in early March. The journalists explained this step by the fact that Egypt, despite its long-standing diplomatic and military relations with Russia, has been America's main ally in the Middle East for decades and annually receives more than $1 billion in military aid from the United States.
The publication called it a "diplomatic victory" for the administration of US President Joe Biden that Egypt postponed the deal with Moscow and approved the sale of 152-mm and 155-mm artillery shells to the United States for transfer to Ukraine.
Earlier, WP journalists contacted the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, asking them to comment on the leaked information about Russia's supply plans and to confirm or deny it. In response, Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid only said that their country's position since the beginning of the war has been based on "non-interference in this crisis" and the obligation to "maintain an equal distance from both sides." He said that Cairo would continue to call on both Russia and Ukraine to stop the fighting and "reach a political solution through negotiations."
As reported by OBOZREVATEL:
- Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov said that Israeli politicians are quite restrained in providing military assistance to Ukraine, as the country has a high proportion of pro-Russian population. According to him, now in this country "we need to campaign and convince";
- Meanwhile, Slovakia has completed the transfer of fourth-generation MiG-29 multi-role fighters to Ukraine. Our country's armed forces will receive 13 aircraft from Slovakia.
