France commented on the situation on the battlefield in Ukraine
French Defense Minister Sébastien Le Cornu announced that in 2024, Paris would supply the Ukrainian army with 3,000 tons of ammunition per month. The Ukrainian Armed Forces will also receive 50 bombs per month from France for a year.
Le Cornu also commented on the Ukrainian counteroffensive, stating that it did not unfold as the West had hoped, but it did lead to Russian troops losing the initiative on the battlefield. He made these remarks on France Inter.
The French defense minister criticized Germany for refusing to supply Taurus cruise missiles, despite making statements for political reasons. Regarding the situation on the Russian-Ukrainian front, Le Cornu acknowledged a positional war but emphasized that the aggressor, Russia, would not be able to win. He noted that Russian gains were limited to small territorial advances.
Le Cornu stated that the Ukrainian counteroffensive did not produce the desired results but prevented Vladimir Putin from gaining an advantage on the battlefield.
"Moscow will not win this war. The Russians have not regained the initiative, and Russian gains are limited to two kilometers, bitten off here and taken away there. The counteroffensive did not work the way we wanted it to, but it does not give Putin an advantage," said Le Cornu.
As a reminder, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov canceled his visit to France for the launch of the artillery coalition on January 18 for security reasons but will participate online.
Earlier, the French defense industry agreed to produce 78 Caesar air defense systems for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Ukraine will contribute its own resources to expedite the process.
In a vote on January 17, members of the German Bundestag did not support a draft resolution calling on Chancellor Olaf Scholz to approve the supply of Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine, with 485 voting against and only 178 in favor.
